2013
Floortje and Mees acting in diptych 'Brave'. The use of two canvases (30x30 cm and 80x30 cm) symbolizes the situation of both cats.
They never leave the house, but still have their hunting instinct. When they see a bird in front of the window they act like predators.
The cats slowly sneak up on their 'prey', but never will be able to catch it...
Safe
2013Caged canaries where used in the mining. Mining workers carry the birds with them into the mining tunnels. If dangerous gases such as methane or carbon monoxide leaked into the mine, the gases kill the canary before killing the miners. So a dead bird was a warning signal to exit the tunnels immediately. Today, the practice of using a bird to test the air supply has become part of coal mining lore, but the ideology behind it has become a popular expression. The phrase 'living like a canary in a coal mine' often refers to serving as a warning to others. The actual canary had little control over its fate, but it continued to sing anyway. In one sense, living this way indicates a willingness to experience life's dangers without compromise.

Fairy tale victim
2013
The wolf sits on a red cape, with a blood- smeared fur. It seems that Little Red Riding Hood became the victim of the big angry wolf. But is this correct?
Who is the real 'fairy tale victim'?
Is Little Red Riding Hood (the human) not the one who was responsible for the bad reputation of the wolf?
Is the innocent look of the wolf on the painting justified?
Maybe, we need to broaden our minds now and then. Don't always listen to what others say, because it could be you're listening to fairy tales. Judge for yourself.
